Executive Management and Board Relations The Executive Management and Board Relations training will be offered at the 2014 Mountain Plains NAHRO Annual Conference on Monday, June 16 and Tuesday, June 17 at the Lodge at Deadwood, South Dakota.
The regular price for this day and a half long training is $450 when offered by NAHRO. Mountain Plains NAHRO is happy to make it available to its members for $375 which includes all meals and events at the management conference (3 breakfasts, two lunches, reception and banquet) plus the opportunity to attend the general sessions on Monday and Tuesday morning.
Course Description:
NAHRO’s Executive Management and Board Relations Seminar is a one and half- day course. The course content focuses on identifying roles for governance and administration, identifying expectations and methods to achieve them, and building collaboration between the two groups to build a strong high performing agency that realizes its mission. Both commissioners and agency executive and senior managers will gain valuable knowledge from this seminar, as well as learn about best practices on how to handle conflict effectively and problem-solve difficult situations for the best outcomes.
The course content delves into the delicate relationship between individual board members and the relationship between the board as a whole and the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director and senior staff. The most successful organizations are ones where there exists a harmony of collaboration and mutual respect between the policy governance branch and the policy administration branch. Individuals participating in the Executive Management and Board Relations Seminar learn will the framework from which a strong highly effective organization is established and maintained.

Course Description:
This course explores the roles and responsibilities of commissioners, enhancing understanding of the commissioner's multi-faceted position as advocate, leader, team-builder, strategist-and more. Increase your effectiveness as a board member and leader, while exploring the intricacies of board-staff relationships and boundaries. Provides an excellent training foundation for the new commissioners. (1.2 CEUs)
Successful completion of this course along with the NAHRO Ethics Training will earn participants a NAHRO NPDS Commissioner Certification.
Joan Smith, V.P. Commissioners for Mountain Plains NAHRO, Board Chair of Metro West Housing Solutions, and Executive Director of the Rocky Mountain Education OSHA Training Institute at Red Rocks Community College, will conduct this 1.5 day training. Joan holds the Commissioner Certification from NAHRO as result of completing the commissioner training track offered by NAHRO and is authorized by NAHRO to teach the Commissioner Fundamentals.

The HUD Fair Housing Training will be presented by the Regional HUD Office of Fair Housing & Equal Opportunity in five 90-Minute Sessions on Monday, June 16 and Tuesday, June 17. There is no additional cost above the standard conference registration fee to attend this training and no requirement to attend all the sessions. Simply pick the Fair Housing sessions that apply to your area of interest.
A representative from the HUD FHEO Office will cover a variety of important Fair Housing topics including: Reasonable Accommodations and Modifications; Affirmatively Further Fair Housing; Compliance Review; Voluntary Compliance Agreements and other Hot Topics. Further descriptions are provided in the Proposed Sessions section of the brochure.
Reasonable Accommodations & Modifications I & II — FHEO staff from the Denver HUD office will provide current, up to date information for andlords, affordable housing providers and HUD program administrators. Service animals and companion animals will be discussed in detail.
Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing -- Does this pertain to me? Yes! In this two part presentation you will identify your current obligations and how they are applicable to current and future PHA obligations that flow from participation in HUD programs.
Hot Fair Housing Issues with Affordable Housing Providers — Do terms like compliance reviews, voluntary compliance agreements and FHEO scare you? Don’t be afraid. This session will discuss the review process, what FHEO focuses on when conducting a review, what a VCA is and some civil rights issues the FHEO is noticing involving affordable housing providers.
